About SportsTrak 3000

SportsTrak is a Windows program that manages school based Athletics and Swimming carnivals, was first released in 1993, and is widely used in Australian schools.

It has been through a series of updates, from an original DOS version (pre-Windows) through Windows versions 3, 2100, and 2200, culminating in this version, dubbed 3000

SportsTrak 3000 is specifically named because it introduces extra features using remote devices such as iPads for data entry.  But it also a reorganization of the way the program is organized, hopefully to make it more straightforward to work with.

SportsTrak 3000 has been created using an Integrated Development tool named WinDev that is a French company.  Being French based, you may occasionally see unusual (to English speakers) messages or labels.

WinDev also automatically adds many features into a program, such as menus on any table or report that let you print or export, or "Did you Know?" windows.  Some of these little quirky bits may not be useful, but it is just WinDev trying to be helpful.  99% of the program is written by us.

Carnivals and Lineages

Lineages are a fundamental feature in SportsTrak 3000 that enables you to connect carnivals sequentially.   This was not possible in previous SportsTrak versions

What is a Lineage?

A Lineage usually is a set of carnivals that are repeated from year to year and share common event records, the same carnival setup, and much the same events.

For example, you could have one Lineage of Inter-House Athletics, another of Inter-House Swimming, another of  Inter-School Athletics.

Starting afresh, without any previous carnivals, you create a Lineage, say Inter-house Athletics.

You can then create a  Carnival within Inter-house Athletics, maybe named Aths 2025.

A Lineage name is very general, without reference to years, whereas Carnival Names tend to be more specific.

Next year, you can create Aths 2026 by asking SportsTrak to copy it from Aths 2025.  This brings in the events, all other details like houses, ages, etc, but not students. But it includes records set in 2025.  You can then modify the program or other details if required.

If you run an inter-school program, it would require another Lineage to be defined because the Records are different to the Inter-house and the program is typically different.
