Terminology used in SportsTrak regarding Finals

Final means any event where the competitors progress no further. Technically, it includes stand-alone events, but the word makes more sense if you consider it to mean the last event in a hierarchy leading from Heats &/or Quarter Finals &/or Semi Finals

Heat, SemiF, QtrF are labels for an event where the best place-getters will progress to another event in the same carnival. These all behave the same way: The best performers are taken and placed into an identified higher level event.

For a very structured carnival, you might have 4 QtrF events leading to 2 SemiF events leading to 1 Final

More commonly for school carnivals maybe: 2 or more Heats leading to 1 Final. For example events 10, 11, 12 are heats and the results feed into event no 110, the final

In this guide, when ‘Heat’ is referred to, it can typically also mean SemiF or QtrF.

Finals can work with their heats in any one of four ways:

Method A - Best Overall, but final doesn't run

Heat finishers must have a performance recorded, not just a place.

Occasionally, heats are run and you want the best performers to be treated as if they had competed against the competitors in the other heats. You do not want to actually run a final event.

Method A can also be a way of running trials: Competitor times for different heats are entered, all of which send results to the same Final Method A Event

After the heats have been run, the A type final must be called up and be processed as if it had run, based on the performances obtained in the heats

Method B - Best per Team

Heat finishers must have a performance recorded, not just a place

The final takes competitors with the best performances from each Team across the heats. e.g. best 2 from each house (or school) move to the final.

Method C - Best per Heat

Heat finishers do not require a performance. Best performers can be selected just by their place in the heat

The final takes the competitors with the best performances from each Heat. e.g. the best 2 from each heat move into the final.

Method D - Best overall

Heat finishers must have a performance recorded, not just a place.

Results from all the heats are sorted and the best performers progress to the final, regardless of which house (or school) or which heat they came from.

As heats are processed in Results Entry, competitors are allocated to the final based on the relevant rule.

If heats are edited, the competitors in the final are recalculated.
